'Act today, Shape Tomorrow'
- The participation in the 2019 Statutory Meeting of International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement - The Republic of Korea National Red Cross(KNRC, President Park Kyung-seo) participated in the 2019 Statutory Meeting of International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in Geneva, Switzerland for 10 days(December 3~12). The Statutory Meeting is organized by 3 grand conferences,¡¸22nd Session of the General Assembly of IFRC¡¹,¡¸2019 Council of Delegates of the Red Cross and Red Crescent¡¹,¡¸33rd International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent¡¹. In the 2019 Statutory Meeting, there were 2,500 participants from around the world, including the representatives from the KNRC, the States joined Geneva Convention, the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies from each country, The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and other international organizations. Through the 22nd Session of the General Assembly of IFRC, 'Strategy 2030: Local Action, Global Reach' was approved as official future strategy, which presents the direction of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement over the next 10 years. Also, the 'Framework for education programs' and the 'Framework for health' were selected as new core activities. Especially, the newly joined Red Cross Societies, the Marshall Islands Red Cross and the Bhutan Red Cross were officially approved to be the IFRC member(Total of 192 countries) through the session.
During the whole schedule of Statutory Meeting, KNRC had bilateral meetings with the several nation societies including USA, Japan, Germany, UK and the presidents of IFRC, and ICRC to discuss the way of mutual cooperation, which can expand humanitarian activities among nation societies. Especially, KNRC requested partners to have an interest in the Inter-Korean issue and continue cooperation. There was also a meeting for sharing the results of the '2019 ASEAN-KOREA Commemorative Summit' on last November, in Busan. Through this meeting, KNRC appealed to participants from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam for the cooperation with Korean government which is carrying out a new policy to strengthen cooperation with south-eastern asian countries. The president of the KNRC, Prof. Park Kyung-seo chaired the 'Roundtable session on How can we implement of the Strategy 2030 as regional humanitarian actors'. During the session, he explained the importance of education activities for disseminating humanitarian value, and introduced the cases about IHL(International Humanitarian Law) educations by KNRC IHL Institute. Also, Ms. Chang Ye-soon, the vice president of the KNRC, and Ms. Hong So-ja, the special advisor for president attended the side meeting named 'Glow Red : Reinforcement of Women power in Red Cross Movement'. They shared about cases in Korea and actively discussed ways to improve them. The Asia Pacific Disaster Resilience Centre, the first reference center in Asia-Pacific region promoted by KNRC, operated VR booth which can simulate the exercise of earthquake situation with virtual reality technology. It could be well-received by participants and promoted KNRC¡¯s technology in disaster response and education.
In this year¡¯s meeting, KNRC won the ¡®Youth on the Move Awards¡¯, which is granted biennially by IFRC. The award was achieved by KNRC Youth members, who have devoted to nationwide environmental preservation activities ¡®Echo Friends Campaign¡¯ since 2004. This award has special meaning that it is second consecutive winning following RCIC(Red Cross Innovation Champion) award, 2017 by online platform 'RCY mate'. |
