As the major blood supplier in Korea, the Korean Red Cross Blood Services (KRCBS) has been supporting in securing sufficient convalescent plasma - allocating available resources including facilities and equipment to freeze and store convalescent plasma; and carrying out the screening test - under coordination with Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KCDA) since last June. The collected plasma will be issued for the development of COVID-19 treatments, being co-developed by the National Institute of Health and a private domestic pharmaceutical company. Starting from this September, the Korean Red Cross Blood Services has also commenced collecting convalescent plasma at the fixed site (blood donation center) after collecting plasma at mobile sites. The first blood drive for convalescent plasma collection was installed in late August at the Daegu province where more than 1,000 voluntary donors participated to support the efficient development of COVID-19 treatment. 25 local donation centers are currently accepting convalescent plasma from recovered patients. People who have fully recovered from COVID-19 for at least 3 months can participate in convalescent plasma. Donors can register through our website, and visit the donation center with a valid ID card. The KRCBS is implementing safety measurements at the collection site - such as keeping social distancing; activating appointment system; and following public health authority safety protocols - to assure donor safety. |
